Genuezska Street in Arcadia: how the name of an Italian city became part of Odesa’s seaside resort
Why is a street in Arcadia called Genuezska?
Many visitors to Odesa, arriving in Arcadia for the first time, are surprised by the name of the district’s main street: Genuezska. Why does it have this name, and what does it have to do with Italy? In fact, the story goes far back. In the early 19th century, central Odesa had a Genuezska Street as well, which today is part of Katerynynska Street. It was named after the Italian port city of Genoa as a symbol of the young seaport’s international ties. However, the street was later renamed, and the name faded from memory for almost a century and a half.
Only in 1984 did the name reappear on the map, but not in the city center. In Arcadia, the segment between 10th of April Square and the seacoast was designated as a separate street and named Genuezska as a sign of friendship with Odesa’s sister city, Genoa. It was an act of cultural diplomacy: in response, Genoa introduced a street named “Via Odessa.” In this way, two seaside gems, Genoa and Odesa, became symbolically connected on the map.
From a ravine to a resort: how Arcadia began in Odesa
Today, Genuezska Street is the center of resort life, but long ago there was a deep ravine here covered with wild акация. Locals called it Rypa, likely from the Romanian word râpă meaning “gorge.” Toward the end of the 19th century, the area gained a new name: Arcadia, inspired by the ancient Greek image of a pastoral paradise. The name fit perfectly for a place with scenic descents to the sea and a mild climate. That’s how Arcadia in Odesa emerged, a seaside corner that attracted more and more vacationers every year.
It is important to note that the natural landscape played a key role in shaping the resort. Unlike other parts of Odesa’s coastline with steep cliffs, this area had a gentle slope, making Arcadia especially convenient for массовые seaside visits and отдых by the sea.
How the first public transport arrived
In 1894, public transport was brought into the Arcadia ravine for the first time. It was a horse-drawn tram (конка), built by Belgian engineer Émile Cambier. Soon, a restaurant on piles above the water was constructed near the shore, and from that moment Arcadia began transforming into a fashionable resort. Within a few years, the horse tram was replaced by an electric tram running directly to the sea, making the trip easier for locals and tourists.
Year after year, summer cottages and seasonal residences grew in popularity here. Among the first landowners in Arcadia was Prince Sergey Volkonsky, a Decembrist and a friend of Pushkin. A legend says Pushkin himself visited these places and admired the sea view. By the early 20th century, Arcadia in Odesa was considered a prestigious summer destination, attracting aristocrats, merchants, and интеллигенция.
Genoa and Odesa: a historical connection
Odesa’s connection with Italy, and Genoa in particular, has deep historical roots. In the 19th century, the city had a noticeable Italian community, including people from Liguria. Many were involved in trade, shipping, and construction, and Italian was among the most used languages in business correspondence.
Odesa has always been an international city, and thanks to such cultural contacts it became not only a port but also a bridge between Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. It is not surprising that decades later, after World War II, Odesa established official sister-city relations with Genoa. This became the reason to restore the name Genuezska on the city map, now in resort Arcadia in Odesa.
Resort Arcadia in the 20th–21st centuries: from санатории to nightlife
The Soviet era: a park, санатории, and hotels
After the revolution, Arcadia gradually turned into a full public resort. In the 1920s, a formal city park was created with alleys, fountains, benches, and viewpoints. The new park became the main place for walking and отдых on the coast. From this point, Arcadia in Odesa gained the status of not only a beach area but also a cultural zone.
After the war, the sanatorium-resort infrastructure developed rapidly. In 1946, the “Arcadia” sanatorium opened, occupying a large part of the coastal territory. It included historic summer houses, green areas, and staircases leading to the sea. These places are still considered landmarks of landscape park art.
In the 1950s, new institutions appeared: the “Moldova” sanatorium, children’s camps, and recreation bases. Each was created with a focus on health recovery, sea air, and physical activity. Arcadia became a symbol of Soviet resort vacations, welcoming visitors from across the country.
By the 1960s, a high-rise “Arcadia” hotel was built, one of the largest in Odesa at the time. Modern, with elevators, phones, and radios in rooms, it matched the era’s idea of an ideal holiday. Architecturally, the building remains a vivid example of late Soviet style.
The 21st century: clubs, beaches, luxury real estate
With the 2000s, Arcadia in Odesa changed its face. The resort entered an era of nightlife, beach entertainment, and fast туристическая dynamics. Famous open-air clubs appeared, including Itaka, Ibiza, and others. The stage and beach became one: by day people sunbathe, by night they dance until morning.
Alleys were реконструированы, pools were built, sea-view restaurants opened, lounge zones, spas, and boutique hotels appeared. Arcadia became the center of summer tourism and parties, attracting locals and guests from Europe, Israel, and CIS countries.
At the same time, demand for housing by the sea grew. Genuezska Street, leading directly into Arcadia, was built up with residential skyscrapers. Some complexes turned into apartments, others into hotels, and others into offices. Shopping centers, restaurants, salons, and gyms opened here as well.
Thus, Genuezska Street became Arcadia’s main artery: thousands of people walk here daily, heading to the beach, a club, a cafe, or just for a stroll. The street lives 24/7, reflecting the rhythm of the modern Odesa resort.
